Visual Literacy Boot Camp

"When technology shifts, it bends the culture."

Visual communication is a fundamental part of the digital-age. Teachers need to create more effective pieces of visual communication from posters and charts to infographics and enable their students to do likewise.

Web designers and bloggers neglect developing these skills at their own peril. This session aims to raise awareness of basic design principles to this end.

Social Media in Education

Social media has become an integral part of our lives since the outbreak of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and the myriad of others.  As educators the question remains, "How do we leverage these globally connected programs to transform learning?" Embracing the concept of social media and integrating it into curricula has proven beneficial and increased student participation in learning.  Together we can unlock the power of local and global networks for teaching and innovative learning experiences for our students.

Building Creative Confidence In an Innovative World

Teachers will be introduced to the process by competing in a challenge to make a marshmallow fly the furthest across the room with accuracy. After diving DEEP in this work, teachers will have the opportunity to put the process in action for themselves. Participants will work collaboratively to go through the process beginning with empathy and creating an action plan that they will implement. This can be based on something they always wanted to try or a problem that they have been trying to solve. Participants will receive feedback and support.

Coding to Learn Math

Code math concepts  to learn math. We will examine SCRATCH animations created to illustrate the concept bringing it back to the classroomfurther by examining student creations. The rationale for this learning process will be offered along with a review of strengths and challenges the process presents.

Attendees will have the chance to critique my work, and create their own programs to code math concepts using SCRATCH or other programming languages they are familiar with. The individual challenge will be to take a math concept that is difficult for children to understand and to code that concept using a program language.

Innovative Teaching with Digital Personalised Stories

Personalised learning has become an important aspect of many Western classrooms, yet little is known about its actual implementation. Drawing on a well-recognized instructional methodology and the learning principles of personalisation, I will introduce you to a free tablet/smartphone app developed at The Open University (UK) which facilitates the creation of personalised multimedia stories and templates. I will outline how personalised learning content can engage children in traditional learning experiences in any subject area, support their creative expression and engender innovative classroom practice.
